With pride and a high sense of environmental and social responsibility, we announce that after its coordinated actions, the Cretan Basketball Teams Union (E.KA.S.K.) succeeded in joining the global Convention-Framework of the United Nations for the Climate Change, being the first Greek sports organization to participate in the “Sports for Climate Action” initiative.
The UN initiative calls on sports organizations all over the world to recognize the contribution of the sports sector to climate change and to take responsibility for fighting for climate neutrality. Signing the Framework of Action, E.K.A.S.K. undertook to work in accordance with the five basic principles set out in the Framework and the objectives of the Paris Agreement in order to:
- Undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility
- Reduce overall climate impact
- Educate on climate action
- Promote sustainable and responsible consumption
- Advocate for climate action through communication
In this context, ΕKASK has already prepared a special sports plan of environmental actions, which is based on 4 main pillars: “Organization-Partnerships-Teams-Cities”. Each pillar includes a series of targeted actions through which the following are promoted: the reduction of the climate footprint of EKASK and the Cretan basketball teams, the cooperation with environmental organizations and bodies of local government, the awareness of the citizens and especially the athletes of Crete on environmental issues. This is a race we can – and must – win to reduce global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid significantly aggravating the risk of droughts, floods, extreme heat and natural disasters.
It is noted that EKASK has already set up a special committee for environmental and social actions called “EKASK Plus +”, which consists of the president of EKASK. Mr. Charalambos Markakis, the members of the Board of Directors Mr. Apostolos Anifantakis, Mr Nikolao Michaki, Mr. Michael Kanakis and the Sports Social Entrepreneurship Consultant and Scientific Associate of EKASK. Mr. Zacharia Stagakis. Aim of E.KA.S.K. is to enable Cretan basketball to lay its own stone for a better world, operating on the basis of the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and its 17 sub-objectives.
